at the Xaviean Club on the site of St Francis Xavier's College, Woolton with the usual venue
of Christ the King Club hosting a blood donation evening.
The greenery of SFX's grounds looked pleasant in the spring sunshine and from the window
of the club, there are some spectacular views of Liverpool City center. As well as being home
to SFX College, the site is also home to a established Squash Club, Old Xavians FC and a
range of sports club/groups that use the College's new state of the art facilities.
The 'Guest Speaker' for the night was our Chairman, Steve Stewart. Steve presented a engaging session on
'Anticipation: Judgement and Luck'. This as evident in the tile was a brand new presentation that drew on the
two elements that determine the success of the referees anticipation of developing play and subsequent position he
takes up, the level of judgement he shows in anticipating the situation unfolding and an the element of luck involved
in this.
Those present were split into three groups, and given a series of 'BattleShip' grid-style posters with a picture
of a developing incident. Within the groups, officials present discussed:
- Where the referee should be ideally positioned.
- Where the referee is likely to have to move to next.
- The benefits/limitations of the positions adopted and the potential risks involved.
After these discussions, those present then viewed video footage of the incidents in the pictures and reflected
upon whether the correct decision had been made and how the referees anticipation effected this. There was also
a discussion of factors which may influence the direction of travel such as skill level of the players, weather conditions,
experience from previous set plays in that match, current position of other players and ball etc.
Those present enjoyed this interactive session and the evening as a whole. A big thank you to all those at the
SFX Club for welcoming on this occasion and their fantastic hospitality.
A reminder that our next 'SOCIAL EVENING' is on Thursday 27th April 2017 where we welcome FIFA &
Premier League Referee, Anthony Taylor in the usual venue of Christ the King, Childwall. All are very
welcome to join us at 8pm on the evening. More information to follow.
