Meeting of the Liverpool Association Match Officials. This included an address by the
President and the election of officers for the forthcoming season.
After a short break, the September ‘SOCIAL EVENING’ begun and the floor was handed to
Steve. Those present began by discussing what they believed to constitute to
‘Serious Foul Play’ (S.F.P) in football matches, before the terminology within the Laws of
the Game (L.O.T.G) was reviewed.
The presentation then featured several clips of incidents that had taken place in games with
those present invited to consider:
-Whether they believed the incident in question to constitute to Serious Foul Play (S.F.P) or if
an other offence was more appropriate to describe the incident- such as Reckless Play or
Violent Conduct.
- How to deal with the Incident in question- correct sanction for the offence to be
committed, how to manage players involved in the incident and deal with any reactions
which constituted to an offence.
- Whether there was anything which in the lead up to the incident which could have
been done that could potentially prevent the incident in question from occurring.
- What was good about how the Match Officials in the clip dealt with the incident
and whether there was anything they could do differently next time round.
The presentation generated plenty of discussion, which was followed by consulting FA
Guidance. Steve’s session on Serious Foul Play meant that those present went away refreshed
and confident on how to identity, deal with, and proactively try to prevent incidences of
Serious Foul Play when officiating in their own games.
Those present greatly enjoyed the evening and expressed thanks to Steve for all his hard work.
